About the Erie County Sex Offender Registry

Pennsylvania operates a single statewide sex offender registry covering all 67 counties, including Erie County. The Pennsylvania State Police administers this registry under the authority of 42 Pa.C.S. Chapter 97. Erie County does not maintain its own local sex offender registry. Every registered sex offender who lives, works, or attends school anywhere in Erie County is listed on the same PSP Megan's Law website used across the state.

Erie County government provides local services and administration for residents, but sex offender registration and searches are handled entirely through the statewide PSP Megan's Law system. erie county sex offender registry erie county government pennsylvania

Erie County is home to the fourth-largest city in Pennsylvania, and the registry reflects the full diversity of the county's urban, suburban, and rural communities along Lake Erie.

Registry listings for Erie County offenders include the full name and known aliases, year of birth, current residential address, and a recent photograph. The site shows the employment city and county, the offense that required registration, and the conviction date where available. Photographs must be updated at least once per year. PSP updates the database the same day any change is entered into the computerized registry system. The Erie County registry covers hundreds of offenders across the city and county.

The Erie County government does not run its own sex offender database. All registry searches for offenders in the City of Erie, Millcreek Township, Harborcreek Township, or any other part of Erie County go through the statewide PSP system.

Note: PSP notes that some data on the Megan's Law site is provided by the registrant. The database is not a complete record of every person who has ever committed a sexual offense in Erie County, only those currently required to register.

How to Search Erie County Sex Offenders

Visit meganslaw.psp.pa.gov to search registered sex offenders in Erie County. The county search returns all offenders with a current address in Erie County. The municipality search narrows results to the City of Erie, Millcreek Township, Fairview Township, or any other specific community in the county. The zip code search limits results to a specific postal zone within the county.

The radius search is especially practical in a county with a major urban core. Enter any address in Erie or elsewhere in the county and select a search radius up to five miles. The tool returns all registered offenders within that area and marks them on a map. This is useful for checking around homes, schools, parks, and neighborhoods throughout the county. There is no charge for any search, and no account is required.

If you are looking for a specific person, the name search covers all Pennsylvania registrants and can be filtered to show only Erie County results. The Megan's Law FAQ page explains what public information is available and how to read search results. PSP cannot provide information beyond what appears publicly on the website.

Erie County and Pennsylvania Megan's Law

Erie County sits in the far northwest corner of Pennsylvania, bordered by Lake Erie to the north. It is also the only Pennsylvania county that borders both Ohio and New York state. The county seat and largest city is the City of Erie, which is Pennsylvania's fourth-largest city. Erie's size and location along a major Great Lakes port make it a significant hub for the region. The City of Erie maintains its own substantial police department, the Erie Police Department, which is one of the largest municipal forces in northwestern Pennsylvania and handles Megan's Law enforcement matters within city limits.

The City of Erie, Pennsylvania's fourth-largest city and the county seat of Erie County, has its own police department that coordinates with PSP on Megan's Law registration and enforcement. erie county sex offender registry city of erie pennsylvania

Erie Police Department and the Erie County Sheriff work alongside the Pennsylvania State Police to maintain Megan's Law compliance across Erie County's urban and rural communities.

Beyond the City of Erie, the county includes large suburban townships such as Millcreek Township and Harborcreek Township, as well as smaller boroughs and rural areas. Multiple PSP-approved registration and verification sites serve the county to ensure all registered offenders can meet their in-person requirements without unreasonable travel burdens. Erie County's location at the corner of two state borders also means that offenders who cross into Ohio or New York must notify PSP of any address or travel changes under state and federal requirements.

Sex Offender Tiers in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania uses a three-tier classification system for sex offenses committed on or after December 20, 2012. Tier I offenders in Erie County register for 15 years and must verify their information once per year in person at an approved PSP site. Tier II offenders register for 25 years with twice-yearly in-person verification. Tier III offenders face lifetime registration with quarterly in-person verification, meaning four check-ins each year for the rest of their lives. The PSP registration details page lists every qualifying offense and its tier assignment.

Offenders convicted before December 20, 2012 fall under the prior framework. They are classified as ten-year or lifetime registrants based on their offense, and both categories require annual verification. Offenders in Erie County who have no fixed address are classified as transient and must verify monthly. All registration requirements in Pennsylvania, including those applicable in Erie County, are codified at 42 Pa.C.S. Chapter 97.

Sexually Violent Predators form a distinct classification beyond the three tiers. Courts designate someone an SVP when they are convicted of a sexual offense and a court finds by clear and convincing evidence, based on a Sexual Offenders Assessment Board evaluation, that a mental abnormality or personality disorder makes future predatory offenses likely. SVPs in Erie County register for life, verify quarterly, and are subject to active community notification whenever they establish or change a residence. The notification process in Erie involves multiple police agencies given the variety of jurisdictions across the county.

Note: Registration periods are paused during incarceration. Erie County offenders who serve time in prison do not earn credit toward a 15-year or 25-year registration period while they are incarcerated.
